The new tax law provides a rare opportunity to defer and partially eliminate tax on capital gains income that is reinvested in an Opportunity Zone (OZ) and to completely eliminate tax on the appreciation of the investment. This presentation will provide an overview of the federal OZ program and will discuss how the OZ tax benefits may be leveraged by business owners to reduce their cost of capital and how investors may use the program to deploy capital in real estate projects and operating businesses located in deserving areas while saving taxes at the same time.
